Falkirk Council has approved funding worth £7.7m to build 80 new properties in the region.
Two sites have been identified for the project, which consists of 20 new houses and 60 new flats.
The sites are Windsor Road in Falkirk and Tinto Drive in Grangemouth, with preliminary work already underway on the scheme.
At Windsor Road, 16 two-bedroom flats – eight of which will be fully ground floor accessible – and eight three or four-bedroom houses will be built. The Tinto Drive site is located on the former location of Grangemouth High School and will provide 44 two or three-bedroom flats – 22 of which will be located on the ground floor and fully accessible – and 12 three or four-bedroom terraced houses.
Councillor Craig Martin, Leader of Falkirk Council said: "Our ongoing building programme is going some way to meet the social housing shortages we face across the area.
"These two projects will feature an energy efficient design and will be built in a very modern style.
"As soon as these properties are completed we will get these on to our system and look to rent these out as soon as possible."
Work is expected to be completed on the Falkirk properties by April 2014, while the Grangemouth scheme will be completed by October 2014.
