Consultation Begins Over New Cemetery Plans

West Dunbartonshire Council has unveiled plans for a new cemetery at Garshake Road.

The site, which is 2.16Ha, has been identified in the Local Plan and can accommodate up to 600 lairs.

Proposals for the cemetery include a shelter and a memorial garden and wall where relatives would be able to place plaques in memory of those who have chosen to be cremated.

A 12-week consultation has now opened on the plans and residents are being encouraged to give their views.

Convener of Housing, Environmental and Economic Development, Councillor David McBride said: "The land identified is in an ideal, peaceful location with stunning views over Dumbarton and I am sure the public will fully support this location.

"The proposed layout is more modern than the current cemetery with more space and wooded area between the lairs. Although people can still give their views once the planning application has been submitted, I would encourage residents to attend the exhibitions and share their views during the consultation period."

The public exhibitions will be held from:

  • Monday 17 June to Friday 21 June - 9am to 4pm at Council Offices, Garshake Road
  • Monday 24 June to Thursday 27 June - 9.30am to 8pm at Dumbarton Library
  • Friday 28 June and Saturday 29 June - 9.30am to 5pm at Dumbarton Library
If the planning application is submitted by October, it is hoped work will start on site in April 2014.
