Combined Heat And Power System Reaches Milestone

A district heating system which provides low carbon and affordable warmth to local residents and businesses is to be installed in the 1,000th home in Aberdeen.

John McConnachie. The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Peter Stephen and Michael King, chairman of Aberdeen Heat & Power visited the home of resident John McConnachie in Denburn Court to mark the occasion.

The heating system which is being installed by Aberdeen Heat & Power will mean Denburn Court will in time be linked to the Combined Heat and Power [CHP] scheme already in operation in 14 multi-storey blocks in Stockethill, Hazlehead and Seaton.

Established in 2002 by Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen Heat & Power has in the past 8 years provided council tenants and private householders in a mixture of multi-storey flatted properties, sheltered housing complexes and public buildings with a CHP system.

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Peter Stephen said: "This scheme continues to be huge success for all involved. Only last month the Housing and Environment Committee agreed that Aberdeen City Council's award winning combined heat and power (CHP) scheme should be rolled out to another eight blocks of flats.

"This means 741 more flats will be linked to the CHP scheme in Bayview, Northsea, Aulton, Beachview, Balgownie, Inverdon, St Ninians and Lord Hays Courts, which will cut the cost of heating flats in the blocks and fuel poverty proof them ensuring the occupants can afford to heat them and cut carbon dioxide emissions making them are more energy efficient."

Aberdeen Heat & Power Chairman Michael King said: "Aberdeen Heat & Power is delighted to announce that we have now completed 1,000 domestic connections of reliable, affordable, low carbon heating systems across the city, completed on behalf of Aberdeen City Council. We are very pleased that the Lord Provost Peter Stephen has taken time out of his busy schedule to come along to Denburn Court today to help celebrate this milestone event with council tenant John McConnachie, who is our 1000th domestic connection."

In 2008 the Chartered Institute of Housing named Aberdeen City Council as the best UK local authority for Outstanding Achievement in Housing for its CHP project, which cut residents' fuel bills by up to 50% and slashed carbon emissions from the buildings involved.

The council scooped two awards – both for its Combined Heat and Power project which slashed fuel costs and carbon emissions in the buildings involved.
