Charles Normandale, his partner Julie Brooks-Hill and the team at Wheely Down Forge in Hampshire are creating a variety of innovative metalwork solutions for projects large and small. And by their own admission they have fallen in love with Ireland after winning a number of sculpture competitions in County Down. In August 2008 they installed a two meter high stainless steel central water feature for the newly restored Castle Park Walled Garden in Bangor. Four weeks later the mighty ten-meter high Tails of Flight sculpture was erected on the Promenade in Newcastle, adjacent to the Slieve Donard Hotel. The finishing touches were added to an entrance sculpture for the recently completed New Downe Hospital in Downpatrick, Co. Down. and was fully unveiled in May 2009. All work is conceived, made and installed by the team who are continually striving to win new projects for the future. They were pleased to have been short listed for landmark sculptures in the Titanic Quarter and Arthur Square, Belfast and Market Street in Armagh.
Master artist blacksmith Charles Normandale has a wealth of experience, which he brings to all projects. Charles designed, made and installed 5 glazed screens in mild steel, bronze and oak to form a private area of prayer in the crypt of Rochester Cathedral. A two meter high contemporary Paschal candlestick for Derby Cathedral, an arbour for Winchester Cathedral and award winning gates for Winchester College. A recent successful challenge was the creation of a sculptural bronze door for a top floor apartment which overlooks Gaudi’s Casa Mila in Barcelona. This is only a small sample of the range of their work and looking to the future Charles’s son William Normandale has been apprenticed to Charles under the auspice of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths. These moves will ensure that the Forge will continue to develop and move forwards both professionally and creatively.
